This project is attempting to eradicate Arundo donax from sites along the mainstem of Sonoma Creek from
Sugarloaf Ridge State park downstream through the Highway 121 crossing. We are conducting the eradication work
from May through October, using hand tools and an aquatically approved use of herbicide glyphosate. All slash
material is being chipped on site and either left as mulch, burned, or hauled away for off-site disposal.
Within Sonoma Creek and its tributaries are populations of steelhead trout, chinook salmon, and California
freshwater shrimp (all threatened or endangered species). The area contains riparian woodland vegetation which,
in most areas, has been reduced to a narrow band confined to the steep bank of the well-incised creek. This
highly valuable fish and wildlife habitat supports a wide variety of migratory songbirds, raptors, and small
mammals.
